‘Audrey, A Tribute to Givenchy’ Opens at Newbridge Silverware

The newest exhibition at Newbridge Silverware’s Museum of Style Icons entitled, ‘Audrey, A Tribute to Givenchy’ is now open. The exhibition tells the story of Audrey and French Couturier Hubert de Givenchy, as well as the connection between Newbridge Silverware’s CEO, William Doyle and Givenchy.

The exhibition features six stunning items created by Givenchy especially for Audrey Hepburn along with details and images from the meeting of William Doyle, CEO of Newbridge Silverware and Hubert de Givenchy in November 2016. A highlight of the display is an alternative design created by Givenchy in 2016 for the Museum of Style Icons’ floral dress from the movie Funny Face.

The aristocratic French designer and maker of style icons, Hubert de Givenchy whose death occurred on 10th March 2018 left an indelible mark on the world of fashion. The designer has long been associated with the actress Audrey Hepburn who was a lifelong client and who famously said, “Givenchy’s clothes are the only ones I feel myself in. He is more than a designer, he is a creator of personality.” Indeed, the pair were so close that the actress had a clause written into her contract that only Givenchy could dress her for her movies.

In December 2006, William Doyle, CEO of Newbridge Silverware went to an auction at Christie’s in London in the hope that he could purchase some of Audrey Hepburn’s most iconic movie garments for his collection. He got into a bidding war for the black Givenchy dress worn by Audrey Hepburn as ‘Holly Golightly’ in ‘Breakfast at Tiffany's’ but was outbid by an anonymous French telephone bidder. It later transpired that the anonymous bidder was Givenchy himself who wanted the dress- at any cost.

After that memorable auction in Christie’s, Givenchy enquired who the under bidder was for the little black Audrey dress and learnt it was William Doyle. The pair developed a fashion friendship and when Givenchy was holding his 2016 fashion exhibition ‘To Audrey with Love’ at The Hague he knew just where to go to borrow some pieces. Newbridge Silverware loaned Givenchy three key garments for his exhibition, the yellow beautifully cut floral dress from the movie ‘Funny Face’, the mustard coloured coat from Audrey’s 1963 film ‘Charade’ and a green two-piece suit worn by Grace Kelly in 1961 on her state visit to Ireland, as well as her visit to the White House in the same year. William Doyle met with Hubert de Givenchy at the launch of the exhibition and Givenchy credited him on the condition of the garments.

Audrey, A Tribute to Givenchy opens at the Museum of Style Icons at Newbridge Silverware from Friday, May 4th 2018. It is open 7 days a week. The museum also features garments and interesting artefacts from several Hollywood stars, musicians, and celebrities. Adult Admission: €7, Seniors and Students: €5. Elvis Presley – Speedway Jacket and T-Shirt

Elvis Presley was born on January 8th 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi and became known as “the King of Rock and Roll”. “That’s All Right” was Presley’s first single in 1954. Presley’s 1956 single,

“Heartbreak Hotel”, was a number-one hit in the US and he soon became the leading figure of rock and roll. His energized interpretations of songs and sexually provocative performance style, made him enormously popular and controversial. Elvis married only once to Priscilla Ann Presley (née Wagner) from 1967 to 1973 and had one child, Lisa Marie, who was born on 1st February 1968.

Elvis is one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. He was nominated for 14 Grammys and won three, receiving the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at age 36 and has been inducted into multiple music halls of fame. Several years of prescription drug abuse severely deteriorated his health, and he died in 1977 at the age of 42.

Speedway is a 1968 American musical action film starring Elvis Presley as a race car driver and Nancy Sinatra as his romantic interest. This red jacket with white vertical stripes and white longsleeve tee-shirt (worn underneath) were both worn by Elvis in the film as he played lead character, Steve Grayson.
